The Volkwagen Dream

If you have ever been to Braunschweig or Wolfsburg  Germany you will notice that about 80% of the cars on the road are either brands like Volkswagen, the remaining 20% is shared between other brands like Mercedes, Audi, that is not because of the 41% premium vehicles that are produced in Germany but also because the Volkswagen headquarters is also located in Wolfsburg about 15- 30 minute away from Braunschweig.

So, I Have been looking for an opportunity to take an internship with any corporation and some of my target companies includes; BOSCH, Volkswagen and the rest, some other major consulting company here in Braunschweig. Although the language has been a bit of a barrier and I have chosen to conquer it, regardless of taking a 6months intensive course. So after sending multiple application (don’t worry I try to send emails directly to the hiring manager) I finally got a reply that I was shortlisted for an interview. Finally, I was overexcited after I have become so used to the rejection email consisting of how wonderful my CV and professional qualifications are but however, they seem not to be able to consider me be for the role. But this time it was different, I got an email, not only an email but an appointment for the interview.  With a one week notice I was so excited, finally, I would have the opportunity to work for one of Germany biggest corporation. I daydream throughout the week,  the joy of being welcomed to the team, I imagined my desk decorated with flower and a lovely picture of my husband and myself, finally, I can pay tax, contribute financially and save for a beautiful vacation in Tenerife, Spain or Casablanca.

The day came after contemplating on either wearing a corporate dress or a skirt suit, black or brown ? should I pack or let my hair down so I can flip it as a sign of confidence? As I walked into the headquarters Volkswagen in Wolfsburg it was like a dream come through, I was ushered into one of the executive meeting room by a beautiful lady in my head I was thinking (don’t worry I am here to stay). I sat down staring at the magnificent room with a brown mahogany long table with leather chairs, the smell of freshly baked coffee filled the air. The lady who ushered me into the room offered me coffee or tea but I was too excited about my new future role at the company so I declined. After waiting for 10minute someone called my name Omolabake Tom-Aba, I answered confidently yes, please. I was asked to proceed into the interview room. After about 30minutes of confidently answering the various question from career goals, my expectation, and expected remuneration. They thanked me for coming and asked me to send an email if I had any further questions. I took a bow from the panel, I was confident that job was meant for me.

I got home and shared the whole experience with my husband and we hope I would be contacted for the next stage or confirmation or appointment better still. A week passed and I was eager to send a mail to my contact I did not want to sound desperate but I managed to suppress the urge.  later on that day, I contacted a Human Resource Colleague of mine I wanted to be sure what the right approach was, he advised me to give them few day more. I obliged and I did. On Friday morning after contemplating on sending the email, I got a response from the human resource team and it read

Dear Labake

Thank you very much for your interest in Volkswagen, unfortunately, we cannot offer you the position we wish you the very best in your future endeavour.

Kind regards,

The human resource team

Volkswagen.

First of all, I was so heartbroken and disappointed, after all my 30-hour research work and several days of practice, this is what I get a rejection letter? but, I was not angry at the responses, I was just not pleased with the briefness of the reply, no reason, no explanation.

Since I would not take no for an answer I wrote another email back asking for an explanation or reasons why I was not considered for the role, It has been 3days I am yet to get a response from Volkswagen. While my experience was bittersweet on, it feels good when a company like Volkswagen contact and invite you for an interview sometime I kept wondering what did I do wrong?

Do you have a similar experience please share with me.
